We keep a guide the way
you'd keep a garden.
Slowly, attentively, and with a lot of pruning. Evergreen Points began with a single conviction: that Australia's most memorable stays deserved a guide that behaved less like an advertising board and more like a trusted friend.
A hotel is not a bed. It's a point of view you get to sleep inside for a night.
We are a small, independent team of writers, photographers and former hoteliers who happen to be spread across the continent. We buy our own rooms, keep our own counsel, and answer to readers rather than advertisers.
This page sets out plainly why we exist, how we decide, and the standards we hold ourselves to — because a guide is only worth as much as the trust behind it.
Why Evergreen Points exists
To return meaning to a word the industry wore out: recommendation.
The mission
To connect curious travellers with the Australian stays that will define their trip — the art house, the pod, the alpine lodge — and to do it with honesty, warmth and a genuine sense of place.
The philosophy
We believe in slow travel and single, perfect stays. One characterful place, fully savoured, beats a dozen forgettable nights — and it treads more lightly on the country it sits in.
The selection method
Every stay travels the same road before it earns an entry.
Nominate
A tip arrives — from a resident writer, a chef, a reader or a night we stumbled into ourselves.
Stay, anonymously
We book like any guest, pay in full, and experience the property with no special treatment.
Interrogate
Design, service, upkeep, value and sense of place are each weighed — over more than one visit where we can.
Write, then revisit
Only the stays that still hold up weeks later are written in, and we return each season to keep the verdict honest.
Standards & responsibility
Editorial independence
No paid placements, no affiliate rankings. What you read is what we'd tell a friend, unfiltered.
First-hand only
We never publish a stay we haven't slept in. Brochure copy has no place in the guide.
Responsible tourism
We favour stays that respect Country, support local makers and tread lightly on fragile places.
Plain honesty
If something falls short, we say so — or we simply leave the property out. Silence is our sharpest review.
A decade of field work
Milestones & achievements
A shared notebook
Two friends begin logging remarkable stays after a slow lap of the New South Wales coast.
The guide opens
Evergreen Points launches publicly, reader-funded from the first day and free of advertising.
Contributors on every coast
Local writers join in each state, deepening the guide from a hobby into a national field study.
Recognised for the work
Named among the country's most trusted independent travel voices by an industry readers' panel.
The guide today
More than 140 vetted entries across four collections — and a rule that still fits on a napkin: only the ones we'd return to.
The best finds come from readers.
If there's a remarkable Australian stay we should be keeping, tell us — we read every tip that lands.
